Glossary

The Lactobacillus genus encompasses more than 25 species and includes a diverse range of organisms. These organisms are strictly fermentative, aerotolerant or anaerobic and have complex nutritional requirements. Using glucose as a carbon source, lactobacilli are either homofermentative (more than 85% of their formulation is of lactic acid) or heterofermentative (production of lactic acid, carbon dioxide, ethanol or acetic acid).
Main characteristics:

  • Maintain a healthy and balanced intestinal microbiota and reduce the incidence of intestinal infections.
  • Are often recommended for the prevention of intestinal microbiota problems and diarrhea related to antibiotic treatment.

Contribute to the modulation of specific and non-specific immune defenses.

The Bifidobacterium genus is gram-positive, anaerobic and often ramified. It is the predominant bacterial group in the intestinal flora of healthy newborns that are breastfed, representing more than 95% of all bacteria present. However, the number of these organisms diminishes with time (starting from weaning) to eventually represent an average of 25% of a healthy individual’s intestinal flora.

Main characteristics :

Several studies have clearly identified that bifidobacteria can be effective in the prevention and reduction of diarrheas related to antibiotic treatment or resulting from the rotavirus in children. Anaerobic bacteria belonging to the Bifidobacteria sub-family are also beneficial for the well-being of the host, both during childhood and in later stages of life.

Moreover, they contribute to the modulation of specific and non-specific immune defenses.

Lacidofil® : Probiotic blend with Lactobacillus rhamnosus R0011 and Lactobacillus helveticus R0052
Two trials investigating the impact of Lacidofil® supplementation on vaginal dysbacteriosis have been carried out in women who underwent caesarean section delivery.  Indeed, prophylactic  antibiotherapy is used in the case of  caesarean section and it may influence the development of maternal dysbacteriosis. In a randomised, controlled study of 96 women, 89.3% of patients receiving Lacidofil® supplementation were considered eubiotic (i.e. having a balanced vaginal microbiome) following therapy, while none of the patients of the control group were eubiotic.
